Crown Nights

from $265.00

After work one nights, I decided to head into the CBD to capture some cityscape as night. I had recently purchased the Nisi Night Filter and was eager to test it out. I had parked at crown and then wondered all the way up the Yarra River until nearly reaching the MCG. I had my 50mm prime lens so it was a challenge on what to capture as the flexibility of a zoom lens wasn’t available to me and I was up to the challenge. After some time I headed back down to Crown and thought how cool would it be to capture the moment the flames lite up the night sky. I quickly searched online and most peoples rendition were wide shots and I wanted something a bit more different and more focused on crown itself rather then its surroundings. The 50mm was perfect; I set up for a vertical shot and isolated Crown Towers and lined it up perfectly. At 9pm when the second lot of flames shined through, I unfortunately didn’t factor in how bright the fire was and messed up the exposure pretty bad. So for the next hour waiting for the next flame show, I set up the exposure, taking a base exposure image of the scene with no flames and then a second image with the flames and then I merged the two together. Needless to say, I feel I captured the essence of one of Melbourne’s most iconic night scenes.
