Cape Schanck is a very common location many people visit to view the night sky. We were blessed with another Aurora Australis event in January 2026 and Cape Schanck is where I knew I wanted to witness the spectacle. What I didn’t realise was how many people were going to be there. Hundreds and hundreds of people had arrived and I had to park way up the road and walk a few hundred metres just to the locations car park. I headed straight to the lighthouse like many other photographers and what we were in for was an absolute show. Arriving at around 9.30pm the best light of the Aurora was around 10.30-11.30pm and closer to 11.30pm I framed up the lighthouse quite closely as I could see rays streaking across the sky and shooting at a 6 second exposure just worked so perfectly to capture the lighthouse lights and the streaks of the purple sky. -
